Tantric yogis believe that it is the nuclear energy of the human psycho physical system. It is comparable to the nuclear energy of the atom. The atomic energy is released through bombardment of the atomic nucleus with high-voltage alpha particles. Likewise, the psycho nuclear energy of man is released through high pressure of the concentrated bio psychic energy mobilized by mental focusing. While the pressure of the bio psychic energy is a tremendous push sideways, the pressure of though energy is like a magnetic pull from above. The dynamic interplay of these two forces produces the following results:

1. Transformation of the sexual libido (retas) into the subtler and luminous ego-transcending or trans personal Being-energy (ojas).

2. Awakening of the psycho nuclear energy and its appropriation of the newly generated valve-energy (ojas) resulting in upward movement along the central canal (sushumna) of the spinal cord.

3. Considerable withdrawal of energy from the vital organs, efferent nerves and externally oriented musculature.

4. Gradual opening or activation of the various energy centers and associated glands of the body resulting in the exploration of the higher levels of consciousness as the regular practice of meditation continues from day to day, from month to month, from year to year.

The tantric philosophy of India is in agreement with modern science that there is, in ultimate analysis, only one stuff of all existence, and that is energy. The primordial energy is known as mahashakti. According to Vedanta, the superconscient divine energy is experienced by the meditator at the highest peak of cosmic consciousness.

According to some, the kundalini or primal energy is the right vagous nerve that controls the nerve phlex of the autonomic nervous system. When thevital center in the medulla oblongata is stimulated, the functions of heart, lungs and larynx are inhibited. At the same time the functions of the stomach, intestine and digestive glands are accelerated.

The most authoritative interpretation postulates the kundalini as the nuclear energy of the psycho physical system. When awakened, this energy is simultaneously experienced as physical, vital, mental and spiritual. So in a sense it is immaterial whether it is described as the physio nuclear or bio nuclear or psycho nuclear or somato nuclear energy. It is the nuclear energy of the enormously complicated organized structure of man’s existence, which we call the psycho physical system.

There are varying degrees of awakening of the coiled energy, which is the static pole and positive nucleus in relation to the rest of the bodily energies, which are dynamic. Whenever a person enters into the condition of immensely intensified consciousness due to his total concentration on an absorbing project, whether scientific, artistic, commercial or political, he feels the thrill and excitement of overflowing energy. What happens is the partial awakening of the coiled energy. His concentrated vital energy (prana), withdrawn from all other affairs of the world, puts pressure at the base of the spinal cord. The coiled energy reacts by re channeling the mobilized vital energy along the spinal cord toward the brain. This results in the flow of new creative ideas, or exciting new solutions to the problems concentrated on.

A greater measure of re channeling of energy from the outer to the upward direction takes place. If and when there comes a time when the coiled energy undergoes total conversion from the static to the dynamic form, the yogi attains what is called bodiless liberation. He leaves the body and becomes one with the vastness of cosmic Being.

Under the impact of their concentrated attack, the positive nuclear of the psycho physical system (kundalini), the apparently static positive pole of the body’s magnetic field, sends forth an emanation or ejection, some kind of “etheric double,” as theosophists call it, which shoots up like an electric current along the central canal of the spinal cord.

Under the impact of breath-control and intense concentration, the root center, like an electromagnetic machine, becomes over saturated. It then produces an inductive action, analogous to electromagnetic action, by which the mobilized dynamic energies operative in the body are converged along the axis. In this case there is no need to postulate the conversion of the static pole into its dynamic equivalent. The root center, like an over saturated electromagnetic machine, induces in the neighborhood an equivalent and opposite kind of electromagnetism without losing its own stock of energy.

In my many years of teaching I have come to the conclusion that the exercise that scares people the most is sitting still in silence. Why? In our culture we are programmed early on that resting , doing nothing for a short period of time, is a result of being lazy.

Regarding health issues with my students many suffer from chronic problems due to their inability to relax. A nervous system that has to work overtime creates a person who ages faster and heals slower. Kundalini Yoga teaches you methods to use to calm the brain down from thinking , and allowing the nervous system to shut down so that the person can sleep better.

Silence requires a person to be within their own thoughts, and if not prepared may be shocked at what the mind thinks and feels at that moment in time. In my teaching experience I have endless stories regarding how student’s discover a deep secret or painful tragedy that was buried inside them. The first question I ask the student is what happened in your life to allow this information to present itself? It never fails that each student will discuss how life slowed down for them-work was slow-more time on their hands and this opened a door for them to remember or visualize a past experience that was blocked within their soul.

In a yoga practice it is the physical exercises that open us up to sit still and meditate. Then the challenge is getting rid of all the random and endless noise in our heads so that the brain can actually hear it’s own thoughts and reflect on them.

First, we use the long deep breathing exercises to calm and relax the mind. One nostril breathing is a great way to center your brain. Cover your right nostril with your thumb and begin taking long deep breaths out of the left nostril. Then reverse the exercise. It is common to discover that most of the time you are breathing out of only one nostril and the goal is to balance the breath between nostrils. In a matter of a few minutes chemicals are released from the brain and your mood shifts. This mood shift allows a person to be present in their life and not react to people or situations. When we feel happier we attract better life circumstances.

Second, in Kundalini Yoga there are specific heart chakra sets to do to attract more abundance into your life. The fourth chakra , which is the heart, needs to be open and clear in order to attract opportunities. When working on the heart many of the exercises will consist of having the arms over the head in different angles. Fire breath is a fast, rhythmic pattern used many times to move blocked energy in the body. I am amazed at students who commit to a 40 day yoga set on the heart chakra and return to me with life-changing stories.

Third, many of the meditations used to open the heart and create a channel for abundance is “Har.” The idea is to open your higher self to a place of surrender so the universe can provide for you. Many times when our heart is blocked so is our ability to see other doors in life. In Kundalini Yoga numerology is used to design the length of time for each meditation/exercise. Eleven minutes is a solid number to start with using “Har” to chant. If you place one hand on your navel point you need to project that one word from your gut. If the intention is clear you will begin to feel a shift that will allow you to be guided and protected by a higher energy within your life.

First, do you sit in a chair everyday for hours? How does your spine feel by the end of the day? Bad posture creates a lack of oxygen supply to the brain. Sitting with a straight spine requires encaging the abdominals and breathing from the diaphragm. In Kundalini Yoga we have a spinal flex series that addresses posture; and with sitting well comes a feeling of having more energy.

Second, when people breath from the mouth it only supplies the upper part of the lungs with air; which leads to a shallow breath. In Kundalini Yoga many of the exercises require using the nostrils for breath. Nostril breathing is vital for helping depression. It is common to watch students leaving a Kundalini Yoga class looking “high on life” because of the breath work.

Third, our minds can be described as a computer chip that logs our past experiences and thoughts. How do we clean that computer chip? In Kundalini Yoga we use all types of mantras to assist in re-programming how we think. If a person is used to saying to themselves, “I am stupid” in a matter of time that is programmed into the brain and stored. Depression is losing sight of your true self and believing false statements from the past. In doing meditation work it not only cleans your computer chip, but also teaches the brain to be present.

Last, depression can become a habit of life. By doing active scientific yoga movement you are forced to get out of the head and into the body. In my many years of teaching I have discovered that the mind can easily lie, but our bodies will always lead us back to the truth.

What exactly are Chakras? How do they function? How can they be worked on? This article will look to answer these and other key questions regarding them, as well as give an overview of each of the Chakras that make up the Kundalini Yoga Seven Chakra System. Although, books can easily be written on this topic this document will concentrate on providing the most important aspects of this profound science.

Charkas are the center piece of the Yogic Energetic model of man. Chakra, which literally means wheel, is best thought of as a Multi-Dimensional Energy Vortex. By multi-dimensional I mean that a Chakra bridges across the many dimensions that make up a human being. According to Yoga there are 4 bodies that constitute a complete human being. These are the physical body, psychic or astral body, the mental body and finally the causal body. Chakras reside in the astral body, and serve as transformers to move energy between these various bodies.

The astral body can be thought of an etheric double of the physical body. Through it runs a vast complex of channels (nadis) that carry the energy of life (prana, chi or life-force). The quality and quantity of prana flowing through the nadis determines the health of the Chakras with reside there. The Chakras, as we mentioned are energy vortexes. They are opened and balanced by this flow of prana. The Chakras lie along the spine from the base to the top of the head and there are seven main Chakras. Each of these Chakras govern the physical region where they are situated and also, are responsible for certain emotional and personality traits. As they are properly activated and energized by the correct flow of prana, the corresponding physical regions are rejuvenated and emotions of a higher quality are embraced.

The seven Chakras and their main areas of influence, both physical and emotional are given below. The format is Chakra Name: Location: Primary Physical Influence: Primary Emotional/Personality Influences.

1. Mooladhara (Root) Chakra: Perineum: Excretory Systems: Physical Security & Fear

2. Swadhisthana (Sex) Chakra: Base of the Spine: Sexual Systems: Self-Expression & Creativity

3. Manipura (Naval) Chakra: Solar Plexus: Digestive Systems: Willpower & Anger

4. Anahata (Heart) Chakra: Center of the Chest: Circulatory and Respiratory Systems: Love

5. Vishuddhi (Throat) Chakra: Throat: Auditory and Speech Systems: Communication

6. Ajna (3rd Eye): Center of head, directly in line with center of forehead: Eyes & Perception: Intuition

7. Sahasrara (Crown): Top of Head: Brain and Nervous System: Bliss

Now that we know what Chakras are and what they do, lets see how we can work on them. The key to opening and balancing Chakras is by purifying the Nadis of blockages and increasing the flow of Prana. This is best done through the use of Yoga and Pranayama. Yoga, specifically Kundalini or Kriya Yoga, and Pranayama are the essentially the science of Chakra Activation. They are designed to systematically dissolve the debris that collects and blocks the flow of energy through the nadis. When the flow increases, the Chakras are opened and, over time, become optimally balanced. This leads to higher levels of awareness and consciousness — which is to say that it leads to a human being achieving their highest potential.

As a Kundalini Yoga Teacher, students approach me everyday with questions about this unique and beautiful yoga. Thanks to all of you who have shared your thoughts so freely with me! Your open curiosity provides me with confirmations and “a-ha” moments about this yogic path of self discovery, soul searching, healing, and awakening.

To help with your discovery process and yoga practice, I want to share the five most common questions that I get asked, along with my thoughts on each.

1. What is Kundalini?

It is the energy of consciousness. It is your awakened inner identity. The energy of your soul. It lies dormant at the base of your spine. Kundalini is a healing force for renewal, inner and outer evolution, and transformation. The key to uncoiling your consciousness lies in activating this powerhouse within you. The goal of Kundalini Yoga is to awaken the Kundalini Energy to achieve awareness. When Kundalini is awakened, our consciousness expands and we become more aware of truth, our inner knowledge, and the creative potential within.

2. What is Kundalini Yoga (KY)?

This is the most ancient of yogas, going back more than 3000 years. All other yogas fall under its umbrella. It is the yoga of awareness; an ancient system of breathing, chanting meditations, and movement that allow you to awaken to your true self.

3. What makes Kundalini Yoga so different?

KY works more quickly than other forms of yoga. One year of KY is said to be equal to five years of Hatha. Why does it work faster? This is because in KY we work with set kriyas (formulated sets of exercises targeted at specific benefits).

4. What are the benefits of practicing Kundalini Yoga?

The approaches found in a regular yoga practice bestow exceptional results! Here is a sprinkling of benefits:

Physical Wellbeing

Improves flexibility, muscle tone, and nerve strength
Weight loss
Balances all systems of the body
Increases strength
Higher energy levels

Mental/ Emotional Wellbeing

Experience inner joy
Greater mental clarity
More centered calmness (peace & poise)
Mindful action instead of choiceless reaction
Reduces stress and tension

Spiritual

Experience knowledge of the Self
Fearlessness
Overcoming momentum of the past
Compatible with all belief systems

5. What are the origins of Kundalini yoga?

Yogi Bhajan, brought KY to the West in 1969.

I have been fortunate to work with glorious students and amazing teachers. I’ve experienced deep transformations through Kundalini Yoga. This is a wonderFULL journey. I hope this article sparks an interest for you.

Kundalini yoga is particular path of yoga, which amongst other things can offer a seeker tremendous occult power. Kundalini yoga seeks to open up the different charkas or energy centers. If an aspirant is successful he will be able to have access to these yogic powers.

The first danger of awakening the Kundalini powers is that they can be easily misused. If we open our third eye it is possible to read others thoughts and have a glimpse into the future. However this power can be easily misused, we may start to look at what people are thinking about, rather than using it for divine purposes we will use it for our own egoist uses. If we do not have purity and genuine aspiration, gaining occult powers, may just give us a tremendous sense of pride. We would enjoy showing off to other people. By doing this we do not gain any divine qualities of peace and inner happiness. When we feed the ego we become proud and this can easily lead to our downfall.

With Kundalini powers we may get distracted from our most important task of self-realisation. Outer miracles and occult powers, which come from Kundalini yoga, do not help in anyway in our spiritual path of self-discovery. To achieve lasting peace, joy and inner happiness we need to conquer the ego and learn to communicate with God, our own soul. If we only desire occult powers it will slowdown and possibly hamper our spiritual growth. For a real spiritual Master who has realised the highest consciousness the Kundalini powers often come spontaneously. However they rarely use them outwardly because they know they have little capacity to effect the transformation of man’s nature. To inspire aspirants to pursue a more spiritual life what is needed is inner spiritual realisation and not outer shows of miraculous powers.

As Sri Chinmoy says:

“Even if we use Kundalini powers for the right purpose, we won’t be able to offer infinite Peace, infinite Bliss, infinite Light that way. No matter how many miracles we show, the person who sees them will be pleased for only five minutes and then he will be jealous because he does not have this power.”

There is a danger in Kundalini yoga we will waste our time. There is a good traditional Indian story, which helps illustrate this point. There were 2 brothers who were practicing the spiritual life. One brother decided he would go away to practice severe austerities so he may be able to gain his Kundalini powers. After 12 years of intense practice he came back to his village. He wanted to show his brother his newly gained powers so he walked across the water on a river. His brother simply paid a boatman 1 rupee and joined his brother on the other side. On getting to the other bank the brother said. “Why have you wasted 12 years to do something which I can do for just 1 rupee.?” The other brother realised he had been foolish and not made any real spiritual progress in seeking after occult powers.

To practice kundalini yoga we need to have purity in our mind and vital. If we still cherish worldly thoughts and try to open up our energy centers it will cause tremendous confusion and our efforts will be wasted, as our energy will be directed downwards rather than upwards. If we really want to practice Kundalini yoga the best approach is to meditate and concentrate on the heart. It is in the heart where we will feel purity in abundant measure. Sri Chinmoy suggests:

“If you wish to follow the path of kundalini, my humble advice to you is to first try to awaken the heart center. The heart center is considerably pure. The vital or disturbing emotions will be purified by the opening of this center.”

We should also follow the path of Kundalini yoga under the guidance of a qualified spiritual teacher. When studying Kundalini yoga we should maintain an attitude of genuine sincerity and reverence.

Kundalini yoga is a physical and meditative practice that has been in use for more than 5,000 years, and employs a holistic approach in promoting physical, mental, and spiritual wellness. Pittsburgh yoga offer Kundalini classes for it aims to tap into the consciousness and energy that flows within us and use this energy to achieve self-awareness and improved well-being. Kundalini yoga combines breathing, movement, and sound into the exercises to not only keep your body physically fit, but also to relieve stress and aid in the healing process of certain medical conditions.

According to Hindu philosophy that governs and guides yogic practice, the Kundalini is an energy coil found at the base of the spine. And according to this philosophy, this energy can be tapped into and channeled to be evenly distributed throughout the body and bring about positive mental, spiritual, and physical effects in the Kundalini yoga practitioner. Kundalini yoga sessions usually start by chanting, the sounds of which are believed to have the effect of relaxation and calming the mind, and thus making the participant more physically and mentally open to guidance.

Like other variations of yoga, Kundalini also combines postures and movements with breathing exercises (known as pranyam) and mantras. The postures and movements used in Kundalini are designed to improve circulation and gland secretion, and ultimately aims to establish in the individual a well-balanced glandular system.

The physical benefits you’ll gain from practicing Kundalini yoga include an improved and strengthened nervous system and a well-balanced glandular system. The breathing and movement exercises employed in Kundalini also improves blood circulation and aids in pain management. As mentioned, Kundalini employs a holistic approach to healing and meditation. This is why this variation of yoga is also popularly used to heal people of their drug and alcohol addictions – it mentally and physically prepares and strengthens the participant to make these life-changing decisions and make the transition easier.

Depending on the orientation of the Pittsburgh yoga instructor you choose, Kundalini can be tailored to specifically address health issues and medical problems. See the human body has several chakras or “energy centers” that we can tap into to allow our inner consciousness and energy flow to remained balanced and prevent physical ailments. Among the conditions that Kundalini can address are headaches, menstrual irregularities, diabetes, drug and alcohol condition, depression, and heart and lung diseases.

In addition to the above-mentioned conditions, medical studies and research have also explored the possibility of the practice of Kundalini yoga as having the effects of improving and developing cognitive functions such as memory retrieval. Kundalini is generally known as an intense physical and psycho-spiritual practice, which should be done only under the supervision and guidance of a certified instructor.

If you live in Pennsylvania and you’re looking for a Pittsburgh yoga instructor, you may want to find someone who is certified and specializes in Kundalini yoga. Also, if you’re looking to practice Kundalini yoga with the aim of learning alternative healing methods for your health conditions, you should find an instructor that teaches Kundalini with a slightly more health-based and medical approach as opposed to those who focus more on physical fitness and weight loss.

Reiki healing, mantra chanting and kundalini-yoga are the some spiritual techniques used in the path of self realization.

These are the form of therapy which helps in releasing the mind/body diseases by releasing the struck thought and emotional patterns stored in the subtle body.

These spiritual techniques are like washing dirty cloths.Like a broom or a vacuum cleaner these techniques clear all the blocks and imbalances present in the energy field of the disciple.

The cosmic power generated in these spiritual practices works on the various chakras that are not yet open, and then there will be manifestation of uncontrolled mental and physical activities which clean and purify the physical, subtle and casual bodies.

The physical body has diseases and potential for disease which requires healing, while the subtle and casual bodies have the imprints of some negative past life karmas, those too need purification.

If there is a flood in a river, what will happen if there is a blockage? The water pressure will be build there until the obstruction is cleared away.

Sometimes the chakras are clogged, dull and imbalanced. If the cosmic energy has to work on a chakra to clear an obstruction or a blockage, a temporary prana or bio energy pressure is built there which creates the unpleasant pain and tension in the corresponding part of the physical body.

Why severe chest pain is felt during practicing spiritual techniques?

Heart chakra:

Thoughts and emotional materials are stored in the Heart chakra. The physical trigger point of this chakra is in the spine directly behind the centre of the chest in the line with the heart.

Physical illness starts out as a suppression of feelings and emotions. Pain, anger, fear, grief, apathy, unconsciousness and guilt are some negative thought and emotional patterns which block the Heart chakra and manifest as the stress, pain and tangled energy in the cheat region.

Universal life force energy used in the spiritual techniques is the universal divine love energy of very high vibratory frequency, which heals the ego/mind wounds and painful memories.

Universal life force energy brings these suppressed and struck feelings on the floor of our consciousness to feel them totally and finally releasing them from our aura.

The process of releasing struck thoughts and emotional patters produces severe chest pain sometimes misunderstood as the symptoms of heart problems.

Solar- plexus:

Past lives experiences, memories and traumas are stored in the solar plexus. The Solar- plexus is located around the upper abdomen just under the rib cage.

Spiritual techniques like reiki, mantra chanting and kundalini yoga heal the past life blocks present in the Solar- plexus.

The traumas experienced by the person in the previous lives are laid down in the solar plexus on the top of each other in the chronological manner. When one trauma is clear next is left uncovered to be cleared.

Many time the disciple re-experience a past life going back ward in the time clearing trauma after trauma, the blocked area of Solar- plexus become more clearer and clearer.

In the cleansing process the disciple may feel severe chest pain; suffocation and tension in the muscles of chest region as the stagnated energies are being scooped out from the Solar -plexus.

Any spiritual natural technique which purifies and clears away body blocks will eventually leads to cleansing of past life traumas.

Reiki healing, mantra chanting and kundalini-yoga is the therapeutic tool for releasing the stuck patterns unless the energy field of a person is cleared, recharged and rebalanced.

With so much talk about 2012 even those uninformed have heard the date. But why is there so much buzz about it and should you care? Beyond the obvious astronomic events that make the year 2012 something to appreciate we have various ancient civilizations that have mentioned the time period as an epoch in human evolution.

I do a lot of spiritual work. It is my career to serve the spirit. I have used mantra work and kundalini yoga to help me understand more about the significance the upcoming years will play in the future of human development. Whether due to my own personal evolution or my connecting with a collective evolutionary force I gained some clear answers. The most relevant answer I received about 2012 I believe is about the circle that builds humanity and our part in our macrocosm. I recognized five elements that create a closed loop between our microcosm and the macrocosm. These elements would be the self, the family/community, the economy, the ecology and the cosmos.

If you could visualize and draw out the preceding elements in a circle one giving to the next in line until the last provides what it has for the first you can understand a little better the closed loop that we live in.

In words, it is the duty of the individual to serve his family and community. The community serves and gives all to an economy that should be structured to serve the ecosystem. The collective states of the interactions between all the elements of the ecosystems or the earth create an energy that resonates into our star system and back out into the cosmos. The cosmos release frequencies of light that can affect DNA and change the consciousness on an individual level.

Since the self is built from the cosmos, these very special astronomic events will only have immediate impact on the individual consciousnesses of the species on this planet. We are about to begin the dawn of the age of self.

This is something so very special that it should be enough to cure anyone’s depression just to be living in such an exciting time of human evolution. Unfortunately, most are too confused about what they are doing in their lives to be open to what is happening in our lives.

Now, the direct influence will begin on the individual level and that is why Mantra Work, Meditation and kundalini yoga can be so beneficial. They are arts of harmonizing the self.

But this time of evolutionary change will not just affect us on an individual level.

As I mentioned earlier, it is the duty of the individual to serve his family and community. But what type of individuals do we have and how are they serving the community. If it should be a standard that any individual should be grateful to serve the community, based on the living conditions of our communities we do not have the desired amount of cosmically connected individuals. If our communities are damaged where is our economy and how is it serving to grow and balance our eco systems?

I myself believe our capitalistic economy is the most damaging problem that is ruining the balance of our natural harmony. But the solution is in embracing the upcoming age of self.

Since the cosmos serve the self we have a very strong force backing the probability of a new age of human awareness. But we must have strong will to understand ourselves for this to have any effect. This is where having a dedicated spiritual practice such as Mantra Work, Meditations and Kundalini Yoga.

When you are doing these types of practices you are connecting yourself with the self and more importantly strengthening and harmonizing the self. If we do not begin putting more attention and focus into these types of self enhancing and self based activities the extra energy we are receiving from the cosmos could become dangerous for the individual.

I think we are seeing this quite clearly with the rise of drug addiction, depression and other mental problems, especially in the youth. The youth being more receptive to the cosmic changes and the mainstream education avoiding all forms of educating students about emotions, family relations and what it means to be content with oneself… we have been creating the problems that so many of us experience within our families… Let’s try to use the help of 2012 to fix it.
