			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In the middle of the 20th century Yoga started gaining popularity among the young people in England, Europe and the USA. When gurus such as Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Muktananda, Yogi Bhajan and A.C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada began their movements from TM to the Hare Krishnas, Indian Vedic philosophy started to interest western youth.</p>
<p>Today yoga is almost a household word and although not everyone in the west knows there is a deep philosophy behind its practice it is readily accepted as one of the greatest ways to bring health to the body and mind. Most yoga teachers concentrate on teaching the physical postures, called asanas, and some also teach the breathing exercises called pranayama. Fewer also delve into the deeper yoga philosophy of self-realization, but from those that do came the interest in India&#8217;s other Vedic sciences of Jyotish (Vedic Astrology), Ayurveda (India&#8217;s ancient system of medicine) and Gem Therapy, which is used in some form in both of them.</p>
<p>Vedic Astrology&#8217;s philosophy of being able to affect outcomes of one&#8217;s karma uses particular mantras and sacred geometry, but the most popular among the Indians and now westerners as well, is the use of gemstones to increase what may be a weak planetary influence. Vedic astrologers, also called jyotishis, will recommend a person to wear a particular gemstone that is said to carry the cosmic vibration of the planet&#8217;s they want strengthened. This may be to bring better health, give impetus to career success or attract good fortune to a person in various areas of life. The Vedic Cultural Fellowship in the USA is one organization that has had much success in their astrological services to Americans from all walks of life. <p>The Ayurvedic gem therapy seems to be the most intriguing and effective means of utilizing the potencies of gems. <p>The origin of this ancient Indian medical science dates back to the era when Vedas (the oldest available classics of the world) were created. <p>Basic Principles</p>

<p>It is in the ashrams in India that these Ayurvedic methods are preserved and also applied in therapeutic practices much as natural methods are practised in western countries through the naturopathic profession. There are many shared techniques and principles.</p>
<p>The traditional manner of treating disease by the use of herbs and substances prepared according to Ayurvedic medicine in India has a very logical and scientific background and is readily accepted by all who recognise the healing powers of herbs and the benefits of the homeopathic medicine. However in addition to the many crude medicines, minerals and other substances used in infinitesimal amounts too subtle to be isolated in laboratory analysis in homeopathy, Ayurvedic medicine additionally includes metals, pearls and precious stones.</p>
<p>The last is an integral and intriguing part of the Indian empirical system developed over thousands of years and now popularly known as Gem Therapy.</p>
<p>Under British rule the homeopathic system was introduced as a system of medicine compatible with Indian traditional methods. It was also a method which allowed remedies to be manufactured very economically, making them accessible to the millions in need. In later decades modern drug therapy overshadowed other systems but traditional Ayurvedic methods are now experiencing a popular revival.</p>
<p>One of the outstanding features in basic philosophy is the consideration of the natural elements &#8211; Fire, Earth, Air, Water and Ether. As in the Chinese system of traditional medicine, the natural elements are seen to affect every aspect of healing, from the balance of the elements within the patient, to the medicine and the current season of the year.</p>
<p>In the Indian system the three main elements and their interaction are considered under the system of Tridosha as Fire, Air, and Water (Earth being symbolized in the physical body and Ether equated with the spiritual agencies). Tridosha is the cornerstone of Ayurvedic medicine and is used in diagnosing disease, in analysing the patient&#8217;s temperament and when prescribing the type of treatment or medicine.</p>
<p>The philosophy of Tridosha is based upon ancient texts such as the Taittiriya Upanishad where it is explained that each element is manifested for the purpose of expanding its life energy, experience and consciously evolving to its perfect expression as an element. This philosophy allows that even the tiniest expression of natural life has its design and purpose, even the smallest atom, or ion.</p>
<p>Dr. Bhattacharrya expresses it in this way&#8230;..</p>
<p>&#8220;The Universal Soul (Brahman) is present in the ion (anu) and the ion is present in the Brahman. The ion has all the powers of creation, maintenance and destruction as those of Brahman. The ion has, like Brahman, the three qualities of existence (sat), consciousness (chit) and bliss (ananda). The doctor&#8217;s business is to introduce the most powerful and attenuated ions into the diseased body and leave the rest to the conscious and intelligent ions. They will accomplish their mission and report completion of work through the eyes and expression of the patient and his internal joy. This is what is known as cure.&#8221;</p>
<p>In Ayurveda the element Air (Vat) represents the nerve force and vital energy of the body.<br />
The second is Fire (Pit) which represents the circulatory system supplying heat for its preservation. The third is Water (Kaf) which rules all mucous surfaces of the body.</p>
<p>To experience Health these three elements must be in harmony &#8211; this is Tridosha.</p>
<p>A patient who has the Air element predominant tends to suffer wakefulness, averse to cold, cracks on hands and feet, brittle hair, impatience, prominent veins and would have few children. He would be alert, intellectually inclined, fond of quick speech and loves music, accenting the sphere of mind and intellect.</p>
<p>Fire element predominant produces symptoms such as inflammations, wrinkles, copious perspiration, irritability, averse to heat, and would be brave, energetic and live a very active life full of spirit.</p>
<p>Water predominant would tend to lethargy, catarrh, poor appetite, emotionalism with strong creativity, fondness of children and constant in friendship, loving and kind. Feelings are very strong.</p>
<p>Earth being representative of the physical body itself, is the playground of these elements in which the dramas of exchange and interaction of the elements takes place.</p>
<p>Orchestrating the harmonious function of all Elements requires some skill and insight. The main causes of imbalance of the elements in additions to wrong use of the individual intelligence by wrong action, speech, or thought is said to lie in the senses -</p>
<p>1) non-use of the senses &#8211; Ayoga<br />
2) over-use of the senses &#8211; Atiyoga<br />
3) abuse of the senses &#8211; Mithyayoga</p>
<p>TRIDOSHA uses the rule of threefold division in diagnosing the pulse also.</p>
<p>1) Fast pulse indicates a derangement of the Air element<br />
2) Jumpy pulse &#8211; &#8221; &#8221; Fire &#8221;<br />
3) Slow pulse &#8221; &#8221; Water &#8221;</p>
<p>TRIDOSHA rules three considerations regarding food -</p>
<p>1) Increase the production of food. Let that be your vow (production)<br />
2) Don&#8217;t waste food. Let that be your vow (economy)<br />
3) Don&#8217;t despise food. Let that be your vow (enjoyment)</p>
<p>In Indian ashrams there is no restriction in applying Ayurvedic medicine. However in western Yoga teaching, administering medicines does not apply as this comes into the province of professionals.</p>
<p>Methods related to self-help however, provide information that is commonly transmitted by yoga teachers and referred to as Yoga Chikitsa.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Migraine can be defined as a paroxysmal ailment, accompanied by a severe headache, generally on one side of the head, and associated with disorders of the digestion, the liver and the vision. It usually occurs when a person is under great mental tension or has suddenly got over that state.</p>
<p>Patient type:</p>
<p>Persons who suffer from this disease have a particular type of personality. They are intelligent, sensitive, rigid, and methodical, and tend to be perfectionist. Migraine comes on suddenly. The head and neck muscles, reacting from continuous stress, become overworked. The tight muscles squeeze the arteries and reduce the blood flow. Then when the person relaxes suddenly the constricted muscles expand, stretching the blood vessels walls. With each heartbeat, the blood pushes through these vessels and expands them further, causing intense pain.</p>
<p>Ayurvedic point:</p>
<p>From Ayurveda perspective, migraine headaches are due to a disorder in tridosha &#8211; the mind-body constitution. Although it is possible to get headaches from disorders in vata, pitta, or kapha, migraines frequently occur when systemic pitta moves into the cardiovascular system, circulates, and affects the blood vessels around the brain. The blood vessels dilate due to the hot, sharp quality of pitta. This, in turn, creates pressure on the nerves, resulting in migraines. Pitta disorders are characterized by the red complexion and eyes, light sensitivity, burning sensation, anger, irritability, and nose bleeds. Liver and blood toxicity are often associated with these symptoms. So, the treatment involves following the recommendations for pitta pacifying foods, herbs and lifestyle. Avoid hot, spicy foods, fermented foods, and sour or citrus fruits. A pitta-soothing diet is effective both for migraine relief and as a preventive measure.</p>
<p>Symptoms</p>
<p>There is a definite pattern of a migraine. The pain is on only one side of the head and often radiates from the eye. The right side of the head may be affected in one attack and the next time, the concentration of pain may be on the left side. Migraine attacks are usually preceded by a short period of depression, irritability, and loss of appetite. Some person&#8217;s get attacks daily, others every month or every two or three months. The main symptoms of migraine are a pounding pain; nausea and vomiting .The blood vessels on the affected side of the head become prominent and pulsating. A migraine gives a fair warning before striking. The patient sees flashes of light or back spots or only parts of the objects in front of him. He may also feel numbness or weakness in an arm or leg, or on one side of the face.</p>
<p>Root causes</p>
<p>Migraine may also results from a variety of causes such as low blood sugar, allergy, infection, excessive intake of certain drugs a weak constitution, low energy, nutritional deficiency, overwork, improper sleep and rest, excessive smoking and drinking. It is simple, but effective. First thing in the morning, take 1 ripe banana. Peel it, chop it into pieces, and add 1 teaspoon warm ghee, 1 teaspoon date sugar, and a pinch of cardamom on top. This is delicious, and it will help to reduce pitta and prevent a headache from arising.</p>
<p>Purgatives (such as aloe vera gel, rhubarb, and fennel), liver cleansers (such as bhamiamalaki and brahmi), sandalwood oil on the third eye, temples, heart, and under the nose, medicated oils or ghee, using gudachi, bala, and ashwagandha; fomentation, and saturating snuff are also advised. Long-term healing includes chyavan prash, brahmi, and ashwagandha. Avoid Direct Sun. Because migraine headaches are predominantly a pitta disorder, they are affected by the hot sun. When the sun rises, its hot, sharp, penetrating rays increase pitta in the cardiovascular system and cause the dilation of the blood vessels in the brain, which results in the painful headaches. So avoid direct exposure to the sun. If you have to go out, use an umbrella or wear a hat or other protection from the sun. Walks in the full moon and by water; and flower gardening reduce Pitta causes of migraines. Soothing Nose Drops. Once a headache has developed, putting about 5 drops of warm brahmi ghee in each nostril will help relieve the pain.</p>
<p>Head MassageShiro dhara (hot oil head massage) is also beneficial. Recommended Yoga Postures: Moon Salutation is especially good for migraines. Yoga postures such as the Hidden Lotus, Boat pose, Bow pose, Spinal Twist, Palm Tree pose, and Standing on the Toes are also good to combat migraines.</p>
<p>A Cooling Pranayama: Do a cooling breathing exercise such as shitali. To do it, curl your tongue into a tube. Inhale slowly through the curled tongue, swallow, and then exhale normally through the nose, keeping the mouth closed. You will feet the incoming air cool your saliva, your tongue, and the oral mucous membranes. This breathing exercise will lower the body temperature, and make the saliva cool. It also helps to quench thirst, and improves digestion, absorption, and assimilation. If you can&#8217;t curl your tongue into a tube, an alternative way to perform shitali is with your teeth lightly clenched together and your tongue pressed up against the teeth. The air is then inhaled through the teeth. Some people feel pain when coot air is drawn through the teeth; keeping your tongue against your teeth will provide warmth and prevent this discomfort. A Healing Yawn. When you have a migraine, gently squeeze your earlobes, pulling the ear down, and do the act of yawning. This will relieve the pressure on the blood vessels and help to pacify the headache. Avoid overexertion.</p>
<p>Migraines from Vata Imbalance: As mentioned migraines can also originate due to imbalance in vata dosha. The symptoms of vata imbalance are: anxiety, depression, dry skin, constipation, and extreme pain. The recommended treatment is: triphata as a purgative, jatamanshi, brahmi, and rest. Shiro dhara (hot oil head massage) is also recommended</p>
<p>Migraines from Kapha Imbalance: This condition is characterized by dull headache, heaviness, fatigue, nausea, white or clear phlegm, vomiting, and excess salivation. Respiratory disorders are often associated with these symptoms. The recommended treatment is: trikatu, brahmi, tulsi tea, inhaling eucalyptus oil, vomiting, exercise, nasal snuff of ginger or pepper. Shiro dhara (hot oil head massage) is also recommended.</p>

<p>According to Ayurveda all living things are characterized by three active doshas Vata, Pitta and Kapha and believes that aggravated Pitta produces heating toxins in the body which accumulate in the mutra vahi strota (urinary channels) causes UTI.</p>

<p>1. Start your day slowly, with some quiet time.</p>
