We are constantly asking ourselves the perennial questions in Life. Why are we here? What are we here for? What is the meaning of life? Short of answering these questions there is one think that becomes abundantly clear as you walk through your experience in life. We have the ability to become better, healthier and happier human beings. We are built with the capacity to develop ourselves psychologically, emotionally, physically and spiritually. Once you discover this truth it almost becomes a responsibility to help and develop yourself. So the questions remains – how do I do it. What are the steps that I need to take to become a better, happier and healthier human being.

Ayurveda is the most ancient and comprehensive healing system in the world. Dating back almost 4 to 5 thousand years ago, Ayurveda blossomed as a natural healing system and still remains a holistic healing system that can bring many benefits to our lives. The beauty of Ayurveda can be found in its understanding of the human being as a mind, body, spirit complex. It would seem obvious that we are not just bodies but are actually a combination of mind, body, and spirit but in our health care system we treat ourselves as if we were only a body.

We prescribe pharmaceuticals to treat our bodily diseases and we leave it at that. We recommend exercise and a healthy diet – that is where we typically end the health recommendations. In Ayurveda, health goes far beyond that. To begin with, the human being is treated as an individual who is composed of a unique body constitution. This body constitution is determined by what elements are present within the body or to what degree these elements are present within us. Depending on these factors you begin to balance these components to bring harmony and wellness. It is of no surprise then when we remember the words of the western father of medicine:

Hippocrates: “The natural forces within us and the true healers of disease”

From this perspective Ayurveda looks to heal the individual completely. It utilizes a very thorough understanding of Nutrition which determines the optimal foods to eat, the right times to consume food for proper digestion, and the right state of mind to develop when consuming our foods. Furthermore, Ayurveda also heals by incorporating natural herbs and natural herb combinations. A comprehensive understanding of herbs is presented give the ways of consumption, the combination of herbs, the preparation of herbal formula and the times to consume along with the mental framework as well. You learn to work with natural oils.

A full spectrum of natural oils is presented through Ayurveda and how to apply these oils in different ways to Marma points which are very similar to meridian points in acupuncture. Ayurveda also has a recommendation in terms of the mental aspects of the human being. The comprehension of mental patterns becomes important, developing presence and consciousness of the moment or of the present moment becomes an important aspect of life for Ayurveda. The capacity to develop the power of attention which is the basis for meditative practices and other spiritual practices that we see run through many traditions. There are no secrets here.

We know that many different cultural and religious traditions use rosaries, malas, repetitive prayers, chanting, meditation or dancing to harness the power of attention or to concentrate the being on one single point. This concentration and emptying of thought patterns allows you to concentrate on the present moment of being. This state helps to develop inner peace, tranquility an objective perspective on life and many other benefits. Ayurveda also incorporates training in meditation for well-being and health.

Even further, Ayurveda incorporates Pranayam or the science of breath which teaches you how many different techniques to harness the power of breathing more completely. Current studies show that the average American only uses about 26 percent of their lung capacity. Through Ayurvedic principles you are taught how to breathe better and fuller breaths and how to nourish your organs through breathing among many other benefits. Ayurveda also looks to incorporate the science of Yoga which is a complementary science and even has postures designated for each particular body constitution.

In essence, Ayurveda offers a system of natural healing that is very complete both in terms of its treatments and also in its understanding of the human being. It offers a vision of healing for curing disease, for preventative health and ultimately for spiritual liberation. Ayurveda offers timeless principles for healing and well being.

One of the best advantages of the Indian native practice of Ayurveda in gaining a popular following is that it generally promotes healthy living as an Ayurveda school of thought.

Ayurveda, as we all know, is a natural system of medicine and treatment that is endemic and traditional to India and is commonly practiced throughout southeast Asia. The science dates back to an estimated time range of between 5000 to 10000 years and over time, has developed into a series of disciplines and categories – all with the same focus in mind which is to promote healthy living, lifestyle and practice.

Ayurveda is derived from the Sanskrit word literally translated as “science of life” or “practices of longevity.” Ayurveda, according to the discipline, is practically applicable to every living thing, as implied by its original Sanskrit name. Its sciences, according to its principles, attribute life to more things than what is normally perceived, examples of which also include wind, fire, air, the earth, planets and stars, among others, are all thought to possess conscience like living beings.

Key to understanding this discipline is the core basis of Ayurveda, which supposes that the entire cosmos or universe is part of one singular absolute and everything that exists in the vast external universe, is also mirroed in the internal cosmos of the human body.

The human body, which consists of at least 100 million cells is believed to be in harmony when it is healthy, as well as in a state of self-perpetuating and self-correcting just as the universe is.

Ancient Ayurveda text called the Charaka indicates that “man is the epitome of the universe. Within man, there is as much diversity as in the world outside. Similarly, the outside world is as diverse as human beings themselves.” This means that human beings, according to Ayurveda, are a living reflection of the universe and the universe is a living representation of all human beings.

Ayurveda was a health care system developed by ancient seers, also known as rishis, and natural scientists through centuries of observations, discussions, experiments and meditations. These teachings and practices were handed down from generation to generation over several thousand years, amazingly, through oral instructions from teacher to student.

It was only about the fifth to sixth century BC, when the teachings were elaborately rendered through detailed texts in Sanskrit, the ancient language of India and for many years Ayurveda flourished throughout India and was used by rich and poor alike, including throughout large territories of Southeast Asia.

Ayurveda is based on the principle of using what practitioners refer to as the five great and divine Elements of earth, water, fire, air and space that composes the Universe, similar to that of the living human body. The practices of Ayurveda are categorized into several groups from ranging from surgery also called the Shalya-chikitsa, the treatment of diseases above the clavicle or Salakyam, internal medicine or Kaaya-chikitsa, psychiatry or Bhuta vidya, pediatrics or Kaumarabhrtyam, toxicology or Agadatantram, immunology and preventive medicine or rasayanam and aphrodisiacs or Vajikaranam.

Ayurvedic dietetics, on the other hand, offers a host of recommendations, ranging from healthy routines for day and night, the preparation and consumption of food, sexual life, and rules for ethical conduct. Ayurveda may be a broad science to understand and practice, however, one thing remains to be seen that is embraced by practitioners all over the world, that healthy living as an Ayurveda school of thought is the key to ensuring that it continues to propagate and flourish all over the world.

Well, if you have not been born in India nor have you lived many years in the country, you should strive harder to learn the practice. As a matter of fact, many Indians today do not know much about Ayurveda either, even if they have been born and have been raised in the country. You need to remember that Ayurveda is only a form of alternative medicine, which complements the current forms of medicine practices. It is not imposed nor is it made a legal and only medicinal option in India or elsewhere.

Is Ayurveda effective? Of course it is. Many people from all over the world could testify and prove the effectiveness and helpfulness of the ancient medical practice. If not for its effectiveness and potency, Ayurveda would not be as popular as it is today. This is also the reason why the popularity of the medicinal practice has spread from India to other parts of the world. But because not everybody could go to and live in India just to learn more about it, Ayurveda courses are available to educate people who are willing and longing to learn the system. Through the years, many people have come to enlist in such course, a tangible proof that there is indeed clamor to spread and continue the practice.

The programs consist of series of learning modules and planned measures to facilitate learning and make it easier for learners. In the beginning, such programs are aimed to bring about deeper and better understanding of the practice. Course materials take learners step by step through the different processes of Ayurveda medicine.

It seems that everywhere you look there is a miracle diet that will help you shed pounds without changing your life very much at all. The problem is we all know that this is a fantasy diet that will never have any long-term success. What we need is a whole body and life change to see permanent results. That is precisely what an Ayurveda diet can do for you.

What is it?

You may be asking yourself what in the world is Ayurveda? This is not a term we here very much in the United States. Ayurveda is a whole life concept native to India. Here we will look at some of the concepts of this lifestyle and how they may be helpful in the battle to lose weight. It also encompasses health and is considered a medical like field in many areas; in the US, you must be licensed in another area of medicine to administer Ayurveda treatments to others. For this article, we will focus only on how it applies to diet and weight loss.

The belief is that the body is made up of specific dosha and that each dosha requires a different approach to health and wellness. The key is balance in everything you do. Simply put, Ayurveda diet is about what, how and when you eat. All of this is highly dependent upon your particular body or combination of dosha.

You should have a trained professional assist you in finding your particular dosha and any areas you may have imbalances. Here are a few basic tips that will give you an idea on how Ayurveda diets work.

Universal Tips

Start your day with a light meal such as a stewed apple. It is much better for your digestion if it is awakened slowly. The digestive system needs a small amount of warm food to get it started in the morning, however the digestive system is not fully revved up until around noon so slow is how you go early in the morning. Squeeze half a lemon into a large cup of warm water; this is good for all systems.

Hold the ice, according to Ayurveda ice slows down the digestive process. Instead, opt for a warm cup of ginger-mint tea. The idea is that the digestive process is a fire and by drinking cold beverages, you “put the fire out”.

Have a warm inviting dinner table digestion begins before you eat. Keep the table free of clutter, diffuse aromas like lemon, orange, or coriander 30 minutes before you eat and keep your mind uncluttered as well while you eat.

Lunch is the most important meal of the day! We are used to being told that breakfast is the most important; nevertheless, in Ayurveda teaching noon is the time the digestion is at its best therefore it is the best time to eat.

Water at room temperature is at the core of a balanced Ayurveda diet. Drink plenty of water and infuse it with herbs for your dosha type. This also aids the digestive system as well as keeping the body hydrated.

Conclusion

The Ayurveda life is more complicated than the few steps given above. It takes a personal and in depth approach to diet and life. The above tips are ones that are universal and that is why they were added. To get the best results consult an Ayurveda specialist who can help you maximize your diet for health and weight loss.

Ayurveda, the holistic healing system of life and longevity, is one of the most ancient healing systems on earth. The compound word Ayurveda literally translated means the wisdom of life or longevity. It is the oldest and continually practiced form of medicine in the world dating back to 5000 BCE – pre dating the Vedic and Buddhist times. Earliest written work on Ayurveda – the Charaka Samhitha, is in Sanskrit language and dates back to roughly 3rd century BCE. This text, believed to be written by a number of wandering scholars, has 8 sections with 120 chapters explaining the fundamentals and cardinal rules of Ayurveda practice.

The second prominent work of Ayurveda – the Susrutha Samhitha written in 1000 BCE, delves in-depth into the science explaining complex surgical procedures. The author, Susrutha, is today widely known as the ‘father of surgery’ – the basic guidelines and procedures laid down by him are considered significant even today.

Ayurveda, unlike its counterparts, promotes a holistic approach to wellbeing concentrating the mind, body and soul. It is not a quick-fix method but one which promotes a balanced and healthy living – seeking to strike a balance between the mental, spiritual, physical and social aspects of a human being. Today, Ayurveda is widely gaining popularity in the West as an alternate form of medicine. It has evolved to become a more organized and professional form of medical treatment practiced by certified professionals after five and a half years of intense training.

There are a number of treatments ranging from de-stressing to anti-ageing, slimming and general rejuvenation available in Kerala Ayurveda to choose from. The programs may range from a couple of days to those that span well over a month. A typical full course program may start with a detoxifying session preparing the body to respond better to the treatment. The main session would encompass a series of minor procedures each aiming for one particular aspect of the body, mind and soul. There are a number of Government approved and certified Ayurveda hospitals and resorts in Kerala. Relax, unwind and de-tox your mind and body through a full course Ayurveda session.

ntire cosmos has originated from the basic substances – The Panchmahabhutas (Sky, Air, Fire, Water & Earth). Ayurveda – The world’s oldest science of healing, is the Divine-largess to humanity, for health and beauty care, is derived from the four principle Vedas: the Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda and the Atharva Veda. It is not an alternative but the original science of healing, known to this world, which originated in the Indian subcontinent about 5000 years ago. Ayurveda is derived from two words, ayu (age & life) & veda (encyclopedia) and ‘Charak Samhita’ (An ancient Ayurvedic epic), expands upon this definition, telling us that ayu is the “combination of the body, sense organs, mind and soul”, the factors responsible for preventing decay.

The Divine creation of the eternal macrocosm is the most precious Divine gift and Life is its quintessence of which Ayurveda provides a complete description. The vedic science of Ayurveda that deals with the principles and practices of the ways of healthy & happy living, claims Prakriti (The nature) and Purusha (The man) as the root factors behind the creation of the world. Man is considered as a boon of nature, the supreme, who in himself bears all the characteristics of his originator and the ability to procreate. As a thesaurus of health, Ayurveda provides basic intellectual elements and principles of medicine, very minutely.

Ayurveda was based perfectly on empirical observations & practice rather than philosophy alone. The traditional medicines used in Ayurveda are of herbal, mineral & animal origin whose efficacy has already been proven, scientifically now. The “Perfect Health Philosophy” of Ayurveda believes and proposes that he who is in the habit of taking balanced & suitable food comprising of all essential nutritional elements, leads a perfect and happy life. The entire system of Ayurvedic treatment is based on correcting & balancing of Tridoshas (The three humors or the blemishes or the metabolic components of the body), Sapta-Dhatus (The seven physical elements of the body or the vital components) and Malas (The end product of elimination or the bodily excretas), which when get excited or vitiated, due to exogenous or endogenous causes including deficiency of nutritional ingredients, result in the impairment of body functions or disease. It may be trite but certainly a true remark that “we start dying the day we are born”. The decay and degeneration, causing discomfort, disorder, disease or debility and ultimately culminating in death of the organism, are a part and parcel of our biological being. Charak Samhita signifies “Only that, which can bring about a cure, is a true medicine and only that who can relieve his patients of their ailments is the true physician” (Sutrasthanam, Chapter-I, Verse 134). Even an acute poison can become an excellent drug if it is properly processed & administered and on the other hand, even the most outstanding drug, if not properly processed & administered, becomes an acute poison.

Health & Ayurveda : At its simplest, HEALTH is the absence of physical and mental diseases. W.H.O. makes the description more wider by adding that “All people should have the opportunity to fulfil their genetic potential”. This includes the ability to grow and develop physically and mentally without the impediments of inadequate nutrition or environment contamination, and to be protected as much as possible against infectious diseases.

Ayurveda had made this concept of Health even more wider (centuries ago) by describing Health as the perfect state of well-being of the organism when it functions optimally without evidence of disease or abnormality besides the balanceing of Physical, Physiological, Psychological, Sentimental & Spiritual functionings of living body.

According to Ayurveda, Debility can be described as generalized weakness and lack of energy, vigour or strength, which may be caused by various Physical or Physiological disorders. And when associated with Psychological, Sentimental or Spiritual-disorders, it also represents a lack of desire or ambition and loss of power or sensation along with non-specific symptoms like fatigability, insomnia, drowsiness, lethargy, unwanted anxiety, loss of appetite, lack of interest in personal or family matters etc.. All the cheerful pleasures of nature’s greatest, priceless gift of Human life are solely dependent on the perfect state of Health. And in today’s scientific & mechanical era of Space-age, the load of work & problems is increasing every moment which is getting burdensome & tiresome day by day, leading ultimately towards a dull life associated with unwanted debilities.

The fundamental concept of Ayurveda, emphasizes that a perfectly balanced diet containing all essential nutrients plays a vital role in maintaining a perfect state of Health. The basis of a good diet is variety because none of a single food contains all nutrients essential for Health. Ayurveda has stored in its vast treasure, a wide range of herbal formulations to supplement the nutritional deficiencies for maintaining a perfect state of health and fulfill the desires of Longevity.

Interestingly, without forgetting the principles of nature and theories of natural constitution, Ayurveda suggests innumerous recipes to supplement the body with such essential nutritional ingredients available from nature’s own resources for the cure of or protection from diseases, because the basic motive of Ayurveda is to treat & cure the ailing & suffering, and maintain the health of healthy human beings. Truly speaking, treating with Ayurveda means worshiping the nature.

Whether you’re interested in preventing serious disease and improving your health in general or you want to treat specific symptoms such as headache, overweight, or insomnia, Ayurveda works. I was practicing Chiropractic when Ayurveda fortunately found me. I have seen people whose lives have changed thanks to Ayurveda. They are joined by thousands of other people all over the world who are living proof that this holistic, integrated health system is as effective as it was when it originated in India nearly six thousand years ago. Today the ancient beauty and wisdom of Ayurveda is spreading to the Western world, thanks in part to the success of the best-selling books and videotapes of Dr. Deepak Chopra, who was one of my teachers. The message of Ayurveda is falling on eager ears for good reason: Although modern mainstream medicine has achieved enormous success in some areas, particularly traumatic injury, acute infections, and certain types of cancers, the track record is not so impressive for treating chronic diseases such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis, heart disease, and most types of cancer. Nor is conventional medicine known for its warm, caring, individualized treatment, or its ability to prevent disease in the first place.

Complementary, alternative, or unconventional therapies such as Ayurveda have stepped in to fill the gap, so much so that they are being called “the hidden mainstream.” This phenomenon was recently documented in the New England Journal of Medicine when it published a survey that found that one out of three people used at least one unconventional therapy in 1990.That number is even higher in 2007. The revolution has occurred, it just is not being televised. Based on the survey results, the authors estimated that people actually make more visits to unconventional-therapy practitioners than to mainstream primary-care physicians, and are spending approximately the same total amount of money out-of-pocket ($10 billion) for unconventional therapies as for hospitalizations.

Ayurveda, a Sanskrit word that means “knowledge of life and longevity,” is based on principles and rhythms found in nature. It makes use of daily and seasonal lifestyle practices (including diet, yoga, and meditation), healing herbs, purification therapies, and a life-affirming mental attitude. Although at first glance some Ayurvedic practices may seem exotic, foreign, or downright old-fashioned, they are in actuality universal, timeless, and as useful now as they were thousands of years ago. In my practice I have found that Ayurveda is more relevant than ever, since it seeks to restore harmony and balance in a world that is growing increasingly out of kilter, with pollution, stress, junk food, accelerating schedules, sedentary occupations, and passive pastimes.

When I came to Ayurveda in 1987, I had been a chiropractor for five years. In chiropractic I had a very specific tool, one that realigned the spine and opened up the circulation to enhance the healing wisdom of the body. Although this was helpful for my patients, for many people relief was temporary and they suffered from stubborn, recurring musculoskeletal pain. This troubled me as a professional and I looked for a complementary alternative medicine that supported chiropractic adjustment. I had a personal interest too: Although I had been meditating for many years, and was able to keep up a busy practice while raising a family, I had to admit I was frequently exhausted. When I discovered Ayurveda, I saw that this holistic approach could be the answer. I was easily able to combine chiropractic with Ayurveda, since Ayurveda had a tradition of spinal manipulation as part of a larger, more comprehensive model of health care. As a result I fell in love with the ancient science and enjoy practicing it and getting the great benefits personally and seeing so many people happy and healthy.

http://www.drhelenthomas.com Hi I am a practicing Chiropractor for the last 25 years. Ayurveda came into my life in 1984. I have study with the best in the nation and the best in India. It is a practice that takes a lifetime to become a master. I love teaching it and practicing it. The results in everyday practice are phenomenal. It takes seven years to get a degree in Ayurveda in India. It is a serious healthcare science that as a doctor of Chiropractic I was prepared to take it on as my specialty. It gives me so much as a human being and supports me as a professional and serves my community with such grace.
